The MSOD Alumni Conference is coming to
Lake Tahoe, California
October 24-27, 2002

Mark your calendars!

he 2002 MSOD Alumni Conference is coming October 24-27 to beautiful Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border.  The conference will provide an opportunity for us to share the latest in what’s happening in our organizations and practices.  As MSOD alumni, we have a lot to offer... we want to encourage you to contribute to making this conference a success by sharing your recent work and innovations.

As a participant in the conference you can expect to:

  • Build professional skills
  • Add to your tool kit
  • Dialogue with a CEO on how OD delivers value and ways it falls short
  • Hear from practitioners about their cutting edge work
  • Discuss and gain insight into meeting the demands of today’s organizations
  • Learn how to bring greater value to your workplace and clients
  • Keep your MSOD degree alive
  • Re-connect with old friends and make new ones

And of course, do all of it in MSOD style!

As a presenter you have the opportunity to share your work with seasoned professionals, try out a new idea in a friendly environment, or make your debut as a conference presenter!  The design process is underway and the design committee is accepting proposals now (see below for more information)!

As the pace of change has increased, there has been plenty of discussion in OD circles about expecting discovery, feedback and implementation of a major intervention in six weeks instead of six months.  Our reactions to this expectation range from a “let’s get it done” acceptance to “are these guys crazy”?  Nevertheless, these are the demands of today’s organizations.  How can we learn to work more effectively and add value in an ever-changing, rapid, and chaotic world?  Join us to explore specific solutions that will increase our effectiveness and responsiveness while maintaining the integrity of the work itself.

Request for Proposals

The conference will feature many of our favorite friends of the program, faculty members, and other guest speakers. However, this is an alumni conference and we’ll be relying on alumni presenters for the majority of the program.  We’re expecting to have a total of 40 or more alumni share their work in a variety of ways. The conference will allow presenters to choose from three different formats to share their work:

Poster Sessions – This format is designed to showcase your material in an informal, low-risk manner.  The presenter creates a visual display of their work on a portable tack board (provided at the conference).  A group of presenters will have their work displayed in one central location during specific break periods. Presenters will share their info (usually including some type of handout) with participants who stop by.  This is a good forum for individuals interested in sharing their work in a way that allows for personal contact and does not require presenting more formally in front of a group.

BriefingsDuring briefing sessions, three to four alumni will present during a 75-minute session.  Each presenter prepares a document that captures the essence of his or her work (anything from a formal research paper to a summary of the work or project).  The conference committee will group presenters together based on common subject matter.  Each briefly presents their material (in summarized form) in 15 to 20 minutes (usually with key overheads/visuals).  After all the papers are presented, the moderator – an individual with expertise in the subject matter – comments appreciatively on the work, both individually and collectively, and facilitates a Q&A period with attendees.  Copies of presenters’ materials are made available to attendees.

Experiential Sessions This format allows presenters to introduce material that that can be best understood and appreciated through direct experience.  The standard length of these sessions will be 75 minutes; however, if you should need more time, modifying the agenda may be possible.  As with the other formats, presenters should provide materials containing background and framework information that would allow participants to replicate a similar experience.

Do you have great work or material you want to share that doesn’t fit neatly into one of the formats above? Tell us about it.  The format isn’t as important as sharing your latest and greatest work with us!

Submitting Proposals

The process is easy. First, send us your idea in rough form.  All we need right now is a general session description, the preferred format for your session (poster, briefing, concurrent/experiential), and a little bit about yourself (background, current role, etc.). We will also need to know how we can get in touch with you - email, phone, and address.

The proposals will be reviewed and presenters will be selected based on the relevance of the session/topic to the conference theme and to the practice of OD.  Selected presenters will receive acceptance notification via email.  Once notified, presenters will have several weeks to develop a more detailed proposal.

Timeline for proposal submission/acceptance:

§         email proposals to msodconference@yahoo.com.  As soon as possible--everything was due February 22, 2002, but we are getting a late start sending out these reminders!

§         presenters will be notified of acceptance.

§         detailed proposals will be due back to the design committee.

Jog your brain for a while - but not too long – then send us your proposal!

Let’s make this conference an incredible experience... the kind MSOD is known for.
