MSOD Alumni Conference
October 24-27, 2002, Lake Tahoe, CA

From: Carol Gausz-Mandelberg (Gamma Prime)
"CGM Blue Heron Associates"

Keynotes included the CEO [Gary Bloom, Chairman, President, and CEO - VERITAS Software ] with whom 2 MSOD alumni work and an outside speaker. I thought the CEO presentation was particularly good.

He suggested OD needed to “help the company get the stuff done” and described what he heard from the first meeting with the head of OD when he became CEO versus what he needed to hear (and soon realized they were capable of from experience with them) as follows:

Heard/Observed

Needed to Hear or See to be Positively Influenced

Touchy feely

Impact

Religious view – we can save the world

Investment in the company

Labels and jargon

End result

He spoke of the “distraction factor” of many CEOs (e.g. Wall Street scrutiny, need for more legal and financial oversight given recent loss in corporate integrity, etc.) and the need for OD to “help get stuff done”. He loves people to take ownership of the CEO’s objectives and do what needs to be done. He now sees that OD can do that in many areas: help the organization move from chaos to organization, ensure consistent organizational models and processes, align employees to strategy, facilitate change and build competencies for success. He encouraged perseverance, especially given the CEO distraction factor.

Take care and please keep in touch,

Carol
